I only come out at night: isolamento

Einfach so.

I was reading this article in The Guardian, “We are all Edward Hopper paintings now”. The visual reference is immediate, even though an article on Artribune disagrees and refers to the metropolitan Hopper, who goes to the cinema and theater. Personally, I don‘t find any discordance between wanting to live in the city and wanting to depict the solitude and isolation of the city itself. I find that metropolitan life offers blatant examples of functional isolation and detachment. It is not necessary to bring as an example the shocking images of the Hong Kong block of flats, to express the concept of alienation and metropolitan isolation. In a way, the city is planned to continuously create unity and detachment, a crowd is formed by single elements who can never meet themselves. I don‘t remember the last time I met any neighbour, nor I desired to meet any. My doorbell is off and I am glad I don‘t even hear them. I look at myself from the outside, I see me living in a box and I ask myself what‘s the meaning of this. Why do we choose to be alone? Why do I want to live in a metropolis but isolate myself? Wouldn‘t it be more healthy to live in a place that would offer more space, a place that would support a better lifestyle? I often think about it. I think what I wanted, after all, is to be able to choose to stay by myself, and choose when being with somebody. Einfach so.

Sorry, I am out!

Leaving Rome, the first metropolis where I lived, made all illusions of pure longtime relationships sink into acid. For a decade I lived in a bubble and my own strength came from the community. It took me about one year to dissolve what was left. The process was involuntary, the realization of the epilogue. All relationships that followed have been compromised. I can’t avoid seeing any relationship I have as temporary, even if it lasts long. It is impossible for me to trust the relationship. Nobody has to think that if I am opening up in any way, that it means anything at all. That‘s my “routine”, to say it à la Burroughs. I have been a great social animal, I play tricks, they are bitter illusions, as everything that goes down the throat. We leave sugar to somebody else.

Or maybe I am wrong, and that is that! Maybe even the best relationships, in our contemporary society, are being kept together with “emojis” and “likes”. Personally, I feel a bit creepy, to not be part of the society in the flesh, but to have an active index finger. I make no effort, though. We get bombarded with a variety of vague information, it makes me tired and willing to be alone.
If it wasn’t real, how could it affect me so much? Must be real. A bit like all the bullshit conspiracy theories you elaborate online. Sorry, I am out!

Roma

Roma, ancora Roma.

Rome and Rome once more. The most beautiful city where I have ever lived, it‘s a ghost town in August. I remember I got furious when I met old people strolling about at two in the afternoon. It‘s 40°C out there, be responsible! But also, don‘t you wake up at dawn anyway?

The street where I have my apartment in Berlin is, to say the least, crowded. There are shops and restaurants at every door. Only in summer I really get surprised by how very crowded it can get. Hundreds of people sit everywhere. I leave the flat and I can breathe life. The city has been under a semi-Ausgangssperre. Exceptions have been made that it has been allowed in fact to be outside. The closed shops inevitably have varied how the boulevard looks like. It has felt like people have owned it again, instead of being hosted temporarily. I have seen them sitting with closed eyes and coffee in their hands. They‘ve enjoyed the sun and the piano version of Hallelujah that my neighbour was playing. I have never heard that neighbor playing before. Maybe he never had the time, maybe the street was way too noisy. For the first time the beautiful boulevard where I live, has seemed to be mine, ours.
