I only come out at night: Safe Mode

Safe Mode
Integrity // I only come out at night: Safe Mode

I am there for no one but myself, selfishly protected by my own certainties. As a child I was obsessed with closing all doors and windows, everything had to be locked, inaccessible. My mom grew up in a household where all rooms would be kept closed, the wooden shutters to be opened only a couple of times a year.

I remember, as I was studying architecture, one of my first exams was technical drawing, I decided to study the geometric patterns on my grandparent‘s sitting room flooring. It was an ancient living room with painted vaults. The flowers and all elements resulting from the puzzle of the drawing were nothing other than parts of the geometrical shapes. I went there during the Christmas holidays, with my work tools, and asked grandma if I could trace the patterns. She opened the shutters of one balcony only. I have never had, in all my life, the chance to see that spacious room completely illuminated by natural light. Unlike her, I love to have everything wide open, double-doors opened, even though I favour a very precise aesthetic order. From the outside, I like to enjoy a neat geometrical structure, a symmetry, a pattern.

I may have created a self-defense mechanism, that grants me impermeability to hysteria and instability. If we agree, nothing really matters, there‘s no real need to worry. I still can‘t grasp if it‘s the result of sharp negativism, or the only way out from a complex knot of anxiety. It feels like I have deactivated some sensory abilities, in order not to suffer from them. These few months have been the quietest of the last years. As satisfied as I am for having got this far, I see the price I am paying.

I move on a flat line, having no ups and downs, which also means feeling no joy. I need to spend a lot of time on my own and I can‘t do any of those activities that used to spark my enthusiasm. It is necessary to also point the finger at something new for me: laziness. We learn to be disciplined, and discipline will be our ally. I look on the other side, soon I will have to hang the mirror on the wall, and look at myself.

Laurie Fox was swimming naked in the pool, thrashing the waves with her arms while the blood streamed from her nose. Her thighs were clasped around Mirikov‘s waist as she tried to have sex with him in the water. Screaming at the sky, she pressed her bloodied breasts to his mouth, then turned and began to shout at the watching tourists. One hand fumbled for the Russian‘s crotch as the other beat the surface, dashing the bloodied water against the legs of the appalled onlookers (J.G. Ballard, Cocaine Nights)

It is easy to die, it won‘t matter much. One more ball and the dress will be torn apart, the decay that has fascinated you turning into macabre. This city will tear us apart, one way or another. Pieces of meat, pieces of memory, pieces of ambition, it‘s all the same. You are a blurry picture, maybe a contemporary artist – who isn’t, nowadays! Everybody has become untouchable. Trash bags are haute couture, not as a provocative statement, they mean it! I am so arrogant, I consider my taste better than yours.

(I renounce my past lo live again, a quiet life, a quiet life, a quiet life for me, a quiet life for someone, an acquired life for me)
